3 Types Of Modern Directories
Discover the three main types of directories you can build, from affiliate to local and user-generated content. Learn how to select the right software to avoid pitfalls.
A hosted, all-in-one platform for membership and business directories: members, recurring billing, listings, email marketing and a blog, with no code.
Brilliant Directories is a hosted platform for building membership and business directory websites. It has been around since 2009, and it puts the parts a paid directory needs into one product: member levels, recurring billing, listings, lead matching, email marketing and a blog. No code, no plugins.
Read the full review: Brilliant Directories Review (2026): Pricing, Features and the Catch covers everything below in more detail, with sources.
Membership is built in. Free and paid member levels, recurring billing, paywalls and members-only content work together out of the box. For an association, a professional network or a local business directory that charges members, that's most of the job.
Lead matching. Visitors submit a request and the system matches it to relevant members, which gives you something to sell besides listings.
Email and content in one place. A newsletter and email campaign builder and a blog are included, so you don't need Mailchimp or WordPress alongside it.
Payments. Stripe (recommended), Authorize.net, PayPal and several regional gateways, with no platform fee on top of your processor's.
Pricing is confusing. On October 26, 2026, the main pricing page listed $97 a month or $997 lifetime, while the account pricing page listed $40, $80 and $120 a month. Ask which plan you're on, in writing.
Add-ons. A VIP Add-Ons Club costs $95 a month, and some items on it (like member data export) sound like basics. Confirm what your plan includes.
Lock-in. It's hosted only. You own your content, but the site can't be moved elsewhere.
Refunds. Lifetime, discounted and promotional purchases are excluded from the 7-day refund.
Design. Templates are Bootstrap-based and functional. Users often describe them as dated.
A good fit for a paid membership directory if you'd rather pay monthly than run WordPress. Less suited to classifieds marketplaces, content and affiliate directories, or anyone who wants to own and move their site.
Compare: GeoDirectory and Directorist on WordPress if you want to own the site, or Directify for a cheaper, quicker hosted option.
